Screen Australia Announces $12 Million in Production Funding for 9 Projects
August 31, 2022Thrilled to share that While the Men Are Away is among the incredible projects receiving production funding from Screen Australia!
This queer, revisionist historical dramedy for SBS is set in 1940s rural Australia, where the absence of men fighting in WWII creates unexpected opportunities for those excluded from power. The series follows two Women’s Land Army recruits from Sydney as they navigate a whirlwind of race relations, rural politics, spirituality, sex, personal growth—and farming.
While the Men Are Away is created by Alexandra Burke (Sissy), Kim Wilson (Wentworth), and Monica Zanetti (Ellie and Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt)), with an incredible writing team: Wilson, Zanetti, Jada Alberts (Cleverman), Magda Wozniak (Bad Behaviour), Enoch Mailangi (All My Friends Are Racist), and me (The Moth).
Produced by Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia (Sissy), the series is supported by Screen NSW, with international sales managed by Red Arrow Studios International.
